When I was a child, when Hong Kong was a British colony, English was the sole official language of Hong Kong. I studied in an English Secondary School and we were educated to speak English more proudly than Cantonese. Somehow Chinese became the other official language in Hong Kong from 1974 onwards after demonstrations from Hong Kong people demanding equal status for Chinese. In 1987, all new legislation is required to be enacted bilingually in both English and Chinese and in nineties, many secondary schools changed to teach in Cantonese. After the handover, the Hong Kong government adopted the \u201cbiliterate and trilingual\u201d policy. Putonghua and simplified Chinese is getting more and more significant in our daily life though 97% of the population in Hong Kong speak Cantonese.\u201d<\/address>\n
